I want to provide you with a basic how-to in this post so that you can learn to draw anything. When you first start drawing and sketching, you don’t need any exceptional abilities or aptitude; all it needs is some practice and a desire to learn. Scroll to the bottom of this post for a lengthy, free PDF tutorial on how to draw anything (current newsletter subscribers, please refer to the email I sent)!

My method for teaching people to draw is to start with no prior experience and work your way up to becoming incredibly good if you pick up the fundamental ideas and skills. So let’s examine these procedures.

Warming up and becoming acquainted with your equipment is usually a good idea. It’s also a terrific method to relax your sketching muscles and get your ideas down on paper. You can experiment with different mark-making techniques to see what your pen can achieve.

So take out your pen or pencil and start making various marks. There are a ton of variations in line work. Use your drawing tool to experiment: make scribbles, doodle around, create dots, stipples, hatching, and zigzag lines. Try changing the pressure as well. Enjoy yourself; if you don’t find enjoyment and playfulness in your practice, you’ll give up.
